Amplificando las Voces (Latin America)

‘For a different today and tomorrow’ Mural in Potosí, Ciudad Bolívar (YouthLEAD)

In Latin America (LatAm), the CTS projects have focused on the precarious position of young people, who despite having grown up in conflict-affected societies, have a clear vision for a more peaceful future. This consolidation phase will integrate learning from across the five CTS projects in Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil to document good practices and key comparative insights, as well as the unique aspects of each project.

Rooted in the research findings and art-based participatory practices across the projects, this phase, Amplificando las Voces: Consolidation of Changing the Story Projects in Latin America, aims to amplify the voices of the participants. Through collaborative dialogue and critical reflection, we will identify cross-cutting issues that are at the heart of building inclusive civil societies with, and for, young people.

The LatAm Consolidation phase focuses on three key cross-cutting themes identified by the CTS commissioned projects.

First, how can the arts be used as a tool to articulate and address complex research questions? Across the LatAm sites, we have employed different arts-based approaches, such as murals, photography, creative writing, and music, alongside theoretical sociology models exploring power.  Second, how to foster and sustain participatory practices across geographic space, time zones, cultural differences, and generations? We will reflect on and document participatory processes that helped to build trust across boundaries, as well as areas for future work. A third, and closely related, theme is how to engage youth as partners in the co-production of arts-based, participatory processes? Young people are at the heart of the CTS LatAm projects. However, collaborators and participants often live in precarity. We will explore and investigate the balance of participant-led practices, with the reality that this work is often fitting in around their busy lives as students, employees and carers for family members in difficult circumstances.

Through the participation of non-academic stakeholders, we will generate and disseminate a number of best practices that may help shape and inform future research, interventions, and government policies and programmes.
