Participatory Arts for Health Improvement (India)

This project aims to document the innovative practices of civil society organisations (CSO) for youth engagement and health improvement in a post-conflict setting. Using participatory methods and audio-visual tools, this project supports youth in Nagaland state in India to utilise film-making techniques for capacity building and advocacy. Led and co-produced by young Naga researchers at The Kohima Institute (TKI) and supported by young filmmakers and CSO volunteers, this project will generate a documentary film consolidating three-five case studies of CSOs’ arts-based interventions with youth in Nagaland.

Combining an arts and humanities perspective with a global health approach, this project will showcase how locally relevant models are generated and applied to address sustainable development and health goals (SDG), particularly SDG 3: “ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.” By linking TKI researchers with young filmmakers and CSO volunteers, this project will ensure peer-support for researchers whilst ensuring a balance between gender and skills sets. Key stakeholders— community leaders and young men and women from CSOs, will be active collaborators in the project, through their participation in the initial design and later feedback meetings.

The documentary film is intended as an advocacy tool for youth mobilisation and showcasing CSOs' arts-based community development interventions amongst young people in Nagaland. For wider impact beyond the project duration, further dissemination will be done in cooperation with local filmmakers through low-cost DVD sales and social media campaigns across Nagaland. In partnership with relevant policymakers, faith-based bodies and youth organisations, informal screenings will be arranged in colleges, churches and other spaces where youths gather, and viewers’ feedback collated via text messages and social media. The film will promote amongst audiences, reflection on key issues facing Naga youth and help carry community voices to the policy level.
