Antanrangada Maatu (2019)

Articulating Women: Interrogating Intersectionality and Empowering Women Through Critical Engagements is an AHRC funded International Networking Project that has involved four partner institutions: Liverpool Hope University, Christ University (Bengaluru), FACT (Liverpool), and Bluecoat (Liverpool). This partnership has hosted four international symposia, a film programme, a leadership workshop, creative workshops for children and university students, and film competitions. An Artist in residence at Bluecoat (from Bengaluru) was appointed as part of the project, expanding involvement internationally. Three films have been produced; others are currently in development as are a training manual on teaching gender equality and a volume of essays on Intersectionality in a Global perspective.

Antanrangada Maatu (18 min., India, 2019, dir: Aasita Bali) was sponsored by  Articulating Women and produced by staff and students at Christ University, Bengaluru. The film tells the stories of Savita, Aruna and Nandini, three women in rural Karnataka who have experienced the sharp end of their culture and decided to challenge its failings. Savita is the daughter of a devadasi, Aruna a social activist and Nandini a representative of women farmers. The film has been used to break down stereotypes and affirm agency. It has been used to initiate discussions of gender and intersectionality in a school setting.
